- Saul = son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin – God told the prophet Samuel to anoint Saul to be king over Israel so he could deliver them from the Philistines – when Saul disobeyed God, he would be replaced as king by David – Saul became jealous of David and tried to kill him – his sons were killed by the philistines in a battle, and he was injured – when his armourbearer would not kill him with a sword, he committed suicide and fell on the sword himself – 1 Samuel chapters 9, 15, 18, & 31
- Seth = son of Adam and Eve born after Cain killed Abel – father of Enos – Genesis 4
- Shadrach = name is actually Hananiah – the prince of the eunuchs called him Shadrach – he was thrown into the fiery furnace with Meshach (Mishael) and Abednego (Azariah) after they refused to worship the golden image made by King Nebuchadnezzar they survived the fiery furnace without any burns to their bodies, clothes, or hair because Jesus was there with them – Daniel 3
- Silas = a Christian who was put in jail with Paul – when they prayed and sang praises unto God, an earthquake shook the prison doors open and all of the prisoner bands were loosened, but all of the prisoners remained, so the prison guard asked then what he must do to be saved – Silas and Paul preached the gospel to the guard and his family, and they were all saved and baptized – Acts 16
- Solomon = son of King David and Bathsheba after their first son died, born in Jerusalem – he became King over all of Israel = when God told him to ask for whatever he wanted, he asked for wisdom and he became the wisest king ever – 2 Samuel chapter 12 and 2 Chronicles chapter 1
- Stephen = he was one of the seven disciples chosen to tend to the needs of the people while the apostles continued to preach the gospel – the first Christian martyr – when he spoke to the Jews about their sins, they stoned him and Saul (Paul) stood by and watched – Acts chapters 6 & 7
T –
- Thomas = one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ – he doubted and questioned everything – he doubted when he heard that Jesus rose from the dead and said he would not believe until he can touch His holes from the nails and piercing in his side – John 20
- Timothy = he was an early missionary – the first Bishop of the church at Ephesus – he was Apostle Paul’s traveling companion – Paul wrote him two letters (epistles) – 1 Timothy chapter 1 and 2 Timothy chapter 1
- Titus = he was an early missionary – he was a gentile from Greece – Paul used him in Jerusalem to show that Gentiles do not need to follow the commandments given specifically to the Jews, like circumcision – the first Bishop of the church at Crete – Paul wrote him a letter – he was sent to the Corinthians to give them comfort – Titus 1, and 2 Corinthians chapter 7
U –
- Uriah = he was the husband of Bathsheba – he was a devoted soldier in King David’s army – King David had him killed on the front lines he got Bathsheba pregnant – 2 Samuel chapters 11 & 12, plus 1 Kings chapter 1
- Uzzah = son of Abinadab – he touched the ark of God/Ark of the Covenant, and was killed by God for his error (no one was allowed to touch it because it represented God Himself) – 2 Samuel chapter 6
- Uzziah = king of Judah – father of Jotham – son of Kohath – he was made King of Judah when he was 16 and he ruled well for 52 years – he became arrogant and went into the temple of the Lord (only the priests were allowed to do that) – because of his sin, God made him leprous, and he was a leper until the day he died – 2 Chronicles chapter 26
V –
- Vashti = she was the Queen with King Ahasuerus – when she refused to let her husband put her on display for other men, he took away her royal estate, and she was no longer the Queen – Queen Esther replaced her – Esther 1
W –
- Widow of Zarephath = God had commanded her to sustain the prophet Elijah – she was running out of food, but she made Elijah some food before she fed herself and her son – God promised that her meal and oil would remain full until the day He allowed the rain to return – her son became ill and died, and Elijah brought him back to life – 1 Kings chapter 17
X –
- Xerxes = another name for King Ahasuerus – he reigned over 127 provinces – the throne of his kingdom was in Shushan the palace – he was a ruler wo tries to show off his Queen Vashti, but she refused, so he made Esther his Queen – Esther 1
Y –
- Young Ruler = he asked the Lord what more he needed to do to have eternal life – when Jesus told him to sell all he had and give to the poor, he went away sad because he was very rich – Matthew 19
Z –
- Zacchaeus = a short rich man, chief among the publicans, who wanted to see Jesus, so he climbed into a sycamore tree – Jesus told him to come down from the tree so He could abide at his house
- Zacharias = he is called Zechariah in the Old Testament – He is thought to have written the book of Zechariah – father of John the Baptist – husband of Elisabeth – a priest of the course of Abia – a prophet – he was made mute because he did not believe the angel of the Lord who said he and his barren wife would have a child in their old age – when he wrote the baby’s name as John at his circumcision, he got his voice back – Luke 1
- Zedekiah = son of Chenaanah and Hamutal – grandson of Jeremiah – he was the last king of Judah before Babylon took them captive and destroyed Jerusalem – he became King when he was 21 – 2 Kings chapters 24 & 25
- Zephaniah = a prophet who wrote the book of Zephaniah – he preached that the “Day of the Lord” is at hand – the son of Cushi – grandson of Gedaliah – Zephaniah 1
- Zerubbabel = he brought the exiled Jews from captivity in Babylon back to Jerusalem – he built an altar for the God of Israel and oversaw the building of the house of the Lord – Ezra 3
